Distinguished Diabetes Researcher Named 2019 Hamm Prize Laureate

Daniel J. Drucker, M.D., a professor of medicine at the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute, Mt. Sinai Hospital, University of Toronto in Ontario, Canada, has been chosen as the 2019 Hamm Prize Laureate. The honor comes with a $250,000 award -- the largest of its kind in the world – and will be awarded this fall by Harold Hamm Diabetes Center at the University of Oklahoma.

Today, the University of Oklahoma announced a $34 million dollar gift made to the Harold Hamm Diabetes Center (HHDC) at OU Medicine. The gift from The Harold Hamm Foundation is the largest gift ever made to the HHDC and follows the gift given by Mr. Hamm in 2007 that established the Harold Hamm Diabetes Center with the goal to cure diabetes.

He was a leader in developing the concept of insulin resistance, the defining characteristic of Type 2 diabetes, resulting in novel ideas about the development and progression of diabetes.
